The Future of Hedgerows: research at the cutting edge
On Tuesday, Jon Stokes, The Tree Council’s Director of Trees, Science and Research, was joined for the first free, online talk of National Hedgerow Week 2025, by four academics at different points in their careers, all actively researching hedgerows for a round table conversation along the Future of Hedgerows theme.
Jon was joined by Professor Pippa Chapman from the University of Leeds; Aarhus University’s Dr Sofia Biffi; Dr Josh Wolstenholme from Loughborough University; and Abhishek Dixit, currently studying for his PhD at Exeter University.

The Future of Hedgerow Trees: living with ash dieback
On Thursday, Jon was joined for the second free, online talk of National Hedgerow Week 2025, by Charlotte Benham, Tree Council Science and Research Projects Officer; and Ian Turner, Head of Major Planting & Ecology Projects, both of whom helped draw up the updated Tree Council ash dieback Action Plan Toolkit for Local Authorities.

Hedgelink: working together for the future of hedgerows
For our final talk of the week, Jess Allan, The Tree Council’s Science and Research Action Manager, was joined by prominent members of Hedgelink is an active partnership chaired by The Tree Council, working together in the interests of the UK’s hedgerows.
Joining Jess for a chaired round table discussion on the future of hedges, and why collective action is so important, was Rob Wolton, Chair of Devon Hedge Group; PTES’ Key Habitats Officer, Megan Gimber; Verity Winn, RSPB Senior Policy Officer (Agriculture); and self-employed professional hedgelayer, Dean Dyer.
