This is a great article thank you Katie and really highlights the need for more young people to be brought into the industry. I work with many young people who are passionate about trees and working in the woodland sector however there is little or no encouragement from the employment agencies that work with them. Our organisation aims to provide industry recognised qualifications etc to help fill the skills gap but it is still very hard for them to enter the industry, what is really needed are proper apprenticeship schemes that are both financially and personally attractive to the younger generations.

Hi Steve, thanks for your comment. I completely agree that those talking to young people about careers, education and employment need more education about the sector and opportunities within it. It sounds like you're organisation is doing a great job of providing much-needed qualifications and skills. We really do need more training opportunities spread geographically so it isn't a postcode lottery as to whether a young person has local training options available to them. That said, it's easy to worry about skills gaps and workforce shortages, but on the other side of the coin there are definitely significant development opportunities for employers, training organisations and young people too.
